NEW DELHI: The Tripura Government has approved ‘Mukhya Mantri Yuba Yogajog Yojana’ to provide financial support to undergraduate students to buy smartphones. Each student enrolled in an undergraduate programme of a government-run institution will get Rs 5,000. Two years ago, during the last Assembly elections, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had promised to give smartphones to youths.

Tripura’s education and law minister, Ratan Lal Nath has said that state government will provide financial support of Rs 5,000 to 14,608 students pursuing graduation in the next financial year.

Students of 38 government-run higher education institutions pursuing graduate courses in medical, para-medical, engineering, science, arts, commerce, law, painting and music and nursing are eligible.

Education minister said that through smartphones students will gather the latest information about their academic curriculum and future career after completion of their graduate courses or when they pursue post-graduate studies, reported BhaskarLive.

The minister also informed that students will have to apply online to avail of the scheme. The amount will be deposited directly into the bank accounts of beneficiaries after scrutiny of their applications.

According to the minister, the government will incur expenses to the tune of Rs 7.31 crore annually to implement the scheme each year.
