Two scholarships worth Rs 4 lakh for LSAT-India candidates
NEW DELHI: The Law School Admission Council (LSAC) has announced two scholarships that will extend support to aspiring lawyers to study at some of the best law schools in India.
In its statement, the LSAC says that the “LSAT-India Topper Scholarship will offer up to a maximum of Rs 4 lakhs to the LSAT-India scholar who achieves the overall highest reported score on the LSAT-India.”
The candidate will have to take the upcoming LSAT-India test on May 17, 2020.
This is the second year for which the LSAT-India Topper Scholarship is being awarded.
The LSAC is also introducing a new scholarship - the Shamnad Basheer Access to Justice Scholarship for a maximum of Rs 4 lakhs. Basheer, a legal scholar and founder of IDIA, an organisation that helps candidates from marginalised communities study law, passed away last year.
This scholarship will be awarded to winners of an essay competition. The candidates can find the details about the application process and deadline at discoverlaw.in which will be updated soon with relevant information. The last date for submission of applications May 8, 2020.
Kevin Washburn, chair of the LSAC Board of Trustees, said in the statement: “Diversity has always been central to the Law School Admission Council’s mission, and I’m pleased to introduce the Shamnad Basheer Access to Justice Scholarship that extends his longstanding commitment to improving access to legal education for deserving students across India’s socioeconomic groups.”
What scholarships cover
These scholarships will cover tuition fees and hostel or accomodation fees for the first year of the law programme, up to the maximum amount allocated for each scholarship. The statement says: “Any unutilised amount from the first year can be rolled over to the subsequent year of law college.” LSAC will also invite scholars to be present during LSAC global events in future. The LSAT-India is a standardised entrance exam adopted for undergraduate and postgraduate law programmes in India. It tests the candidates for skills that are considered essential for success in a law school. LSAT-India score is accepted by many top law colleges for admission. Candidates can register for the LSAT-India exam to be held on May 17, 2020.
