NEW DELHI: Banaras Hindu University (BHU) has announced it will reopen from November 23 in a phased manner, while Central University Gujarat has instructed students to not visit campus owing to increasing cases of COVID-19 infection in the state.
Earlier this month, the University Grants Commission (UGC) issued reopening guidelines for universities and colleges. For central universities, the UGC left the decision to reopen with the heads of the respective institutions whose stand would depend on the prevailing situation in the area.
COVID-19: BHU reopening
The BHU guidelines state that the university is going to re-open in a phased manner. In the first phase, the final year students of PhD programmes of science streams will be permitted to visit their respective departments and laboratories.
BHU has also announced it will constitute a core committee for implementation and monitoring of guidelines. “These committees will assess the situation periodically. Keeping in view the situation further re-opening of the departments of other streams will be decided,” the BHU circular reads.
COVID-19: CUG to stay closed
While the CUG has directed students to not travel to the campus due to the worsening situation in and around Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar due to increased Covid-19 infections.
"All students are herewith directed not to travel to the university from their current locations,” said a circular issued by the Central University of Gujarat registrar, Alok Gupta, on November 20. “The university hostels and allied services are not in operation and demand of any students who come and insist on accommodation there will not be entertained...Until [the situation improves] entry of students in the university hostels is strictly forbidden in the interest of health and safety".
