NEW DELHI: The University Grant Commission (UGC) is planning to create positions for professors of practice based on their industrial experiences in universities across India. Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan said in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha that such a decision, if taken, will not affect the sanctioned positions of the university. He also said that such provisions are already there in IITs.

Professors of practice are faculty who are hired by institutions since they possess extensive experience in their respective fields, making them eligible to teach students. Pradhan stressed the collaboration between academia and industries as mentioned in the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 for promoting holistic and multidisciplinary education with a focus on creativity, innovation, and employability.
