NEW DELHI: The University of Delhi (DU) commemorated the 77th Independence Day with fervour and patriotism. Yogesh Singh, the vice chancellor of DU, hosted the national flag at the university campus. Singh highlighted the significance of patriotism within the university community and emphasised on the role of education in nurturing responsible citizens.
The ceremony was attended by members of the university's administration, including Prakash Singh, director of South Delhi Campus; Balram Pani, dean of colleges; and Vikas Gupta, registrar with other department deans, faculty, heads of departments, staff, and students.
Addressing the gathering, the vice chancellor of DU Yogesh Singh emphasised that universities play a crucial role in cultivating a culture of patriotism among the youth and underlined the responsibility of educators in fostering academic excellence and ethical values.

“Today is an India of new colours, an India of new hopes. In such a situation, a lot is expected from the universities. Our job is to create minds that love the nation and care for the nation. Awarding a degree is one of the aims of education, it is a necessary condition, but it is not sufficient," said the DU vice-chancellor.
Before the flag-hoisting ceremony, Singh inspected the NCC parade. The music department students gave various patriotic performances on patriotic songs. At the end of the ceremony, the vice chancellor administered the oath of five vows “PanchPran” given by prime minister Narendra Modi to the attendees.

The Vice-Chancellor stressed that the development of values is a shared responsibility, and educators need to lead by example. He pointed out that only educated individuals from privileged backgrounds can also deviate from the path of morality, drawing attention to historical examples such as Osama bin Laden and the attacks on the World Trade Center.
He applauded the achievements of the University of Delhi, celebrating its centenary year, and acknowledged the presence of esteemed dignitaries, including the vice-president, prime minister, and president of India, during the university's centenary celebration.

In conclusion, Singh said that the Independence Day celebration is a time for reflection on the sacrifices of freedom fighters and the legacy of a rich cultural heritage. “ Democracy and our military forces are continuously working to maintain and strengthen this freedom gained after long struggles, they all also deserve congratulations. Because of them, this country has been safe for 76 years” the vice chancellor further added.
