Uttar Pradesh has 1.26 lakh vacant teaching positions at primary level

Education ministry also said that more than 15,000 teaching posts are vacant at the secondary level in Uttar Pradesh schools.

NEW DELHI: Uttar Pradesh has over 1.26 lakh teaching vacancies at the primary level, the education ministry said in response to a question in Parliament, during the winter session.

According to the ministry, there are 5.80 lakh sanctioned teaching posts for Classes to 1 to 8 out of which only 4.53 lakh have working teachers.

The ministry also said that more than 15,500 teaching posts are vacant in Uttar Pradesh schools at the secondary level.

UPTET, teachers’ recruitment

Clarifying the status of recruitment, the ministry said that 1.20 lakh teachers were recruited for the primary level since 2017 by the Uttar Pradesh Government, led by Adityanath. At the secondary level, more than 6,000 recruitments were done by the government in the past six months, the ministry said.

The Uttar Pradesh Basic Education Board (UPBEB) had recently cancelled the Uttar Pradesh Teacher Eligibility Test 2021, scheduled on December 1 due to a question paper leakage. The UPTET exam date is yet to be announced by the authorities.

An analysis by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) had reported that there are more than 11 lakh vacancies in schools across India. The report also noted that more than one lakh schools in India have one teacher.
