New Delhi: Two students of Visva Bharati university, West Bengal, were brutally attacked with broken wickets and wooden rods on yesterday, January 15, by a group allegedly belonging to the Akhil Bharatiya Vidya Parishad (ABVP).

The two students, identified as Swapnil Mukherjee and Shubh Nath, were reportedly admitted to Pearson Memorial Hospital. Dozens of students protested today, January 16, by holding placards condemning the violence by ABVP members.

The Students Federation of India and the All India Democratic Students Organisation claimed that the assailants belonged to ABVP. ABVP members were not available to comment on the issue, reports Anandabazar Patrika.

The All India Trinamool Congress gave a statement, through its official Twitter account, condemning “the violent attacks of students affiliated to Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)” and appealed to the administration to take action against the culprits.

On January 8, BJP Member of Parliament Swapan Dasgupta was locked up in the seminar hall by student members of Left organisations as he arrived in the campus to give a lecture on the Citizenship Amendment Act 2019 (CAA). Students belonging to the Left organisations alleged that yesterday's attack was related to this incident.

The Left students’ organisations had planned to conduct an anti-CAA protest at the university on January 15.

Exams postponed again

Meanwhile, the Aligarh Muslim University administration has informed that all semester examinations that were scheduled to happen upon the reopening of the university post-winter vacations stand “postponed due to unavoidable circumstances”.

It informed that a fresh schedule will be decided after a meeting with all the Deans, principals, and other functionaries of the administration.

The exams were initially postponed to January following the anti-CAA protests in the campus. On December 15, Uttar Pradesh police entered the campus and beat up the students protesting against CAA. Several students were injured and one research scholar had lost his hand following the incident.
