VMSB UTU cancels two semester exams over alleged paper leak; re-exams in August

Veer Madho Singh Bhandari Uttarakhand University of Technology (VMSB UTU), Dehradun has cancelled the exam of two even semester 2025-26 subjects as the question papers were allegedly shared with the students prior to the examination.

The university has announced that the fresh exams for both subjects will be held in the third week of August 2026, the official notice will be released later on the official website. The university also urged the directors and principals of affiliated colleges to immediately inform the students and post the notice on the respective institution's website.

The university explained that it took this action because it was necessary to preserve fairness, transparency and credibility of the examination system and it expressed regret for the difficulty created to students and faculty.

Investigation on exam paper

The action is in response to a complaint about the machine learning for internet of things (subject code: IOTT004) examination. In response to the complaint, the vice chancellor decided to establish a high-level inquiry committee. The Shivalik college of engineering, Dehradun, also, did an in-house investigation of the issue.

The reports submitted by both inquiry committees revealed that Ashish Kumar Gupta, assistant professor of Shivalik college of engineering and an external invigilator for IOTT004, allegedly had shared the same questions with the students on the internal portal of the institute as well as on WhatsApp before the exam. The incident was a serious breach of examination confidentiality, and compromised the integrity of the examination process.

Second examination also cancelled

During the investigation, the university also discovered hints of another question paper prepared by the same faculty member. Electromagnetic Field Theory (Subject Code: ECT043) is also affected.

The university immediately canceled both examinations in keeping with the results of the inquiry and due to the credibility of the examination system. The decision is in effect for even semester 2025-26 exams.

Barred from serving on the faculty for seven years

Ashish Kumar Gupta has been removed from the examination-related work of VMSB UTU on a debarment for seven years from now with immediate effect. It also warned Shivalik college of engineering about their monitoring mechanisms and ensured that the norms about examination confidentiality were followed.
