NEW DELHI: The West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education (WBCHSE) has introduced five new subjects in the higher secondary curriculum for the academic year 2025-26. West Bengal Class 12 students will learn artificial intelligence and data science (AIDS), which will replace the two subjects - ARTI and DTSC - introduced two years back.
Besides AI and data science, the board has announced the introduction of Environmental Science (EVSC), Fisheries and Aquaculture (FSAQ), Business Mathematics and Basic Statistics (BMBS), and Basic Mathematics for Social Sciences (BMSS). “Two subjects, ARTI and DTSC, introduced from academic year 2023-24 will be withdrawn and AIDS will be introduced to all schools either with ARTI or DTSC in their subject list,” the board said.
The board has also announced revised set structure or the revised subject combinations for the West Bengal HS board exam 2025-26. It has also notified the eligibility criteria for teachers to be recruited for the newly introduced courses.
As per the West Bengal HS routine 2025, the state board will conduct the Class 12 theory exams from March 3 to 18.
Eligibility criteria for schools to launch the new courses, and the details of allowed set number for students is given below.

Artificial Intelligence and Data Science (AIDS) | Students from set 1 | Computer Science (COMS) must be running at the school. A duly qualified teacher in COMS can teach this subject. |
Environmental Science (EVSC) | Students from set 1 | Environment Studies or Biological Science [BIOS] or Chemistry (CHEM) must be running at the school. Duly qualified permanent teachers in ENVS, BIOS or CHEM can teach this subject. |
Fisheries and Aquaculture (FSAQ) | Students from set 1 and 3 | Biological Science [BIOS] must be running at the school. Duly qualified permanent teacher in BIOS can teach this subject |
Business Mathematics and Basic Statistics (BMBS) | Students from Set 2 | Mathematics [MATH] must be running at the school. Duly qualified permanent teacher in MATH can teach this subject |
Basic Mathematics for Social Sciences (BMSS) | Students from Set 3 | Mathematics (MATH) must be running at the school. Duly qualified permanent teacher in MATH can teach this subject. |
“It may be noted that one duly qualified teacher can teach at most three subjects out of COMA, COMS, AIDS, CBST, and APAI. Any school having more than three of these subjects should have two duly qualified teachers,” the board said. “In all cases, Consent from teacher needed stating that he/she would examine HS answer scripts of all those subjects which he/she would be teaching at the school, it added.
Here’s the revised set structure or subject combinations for West Bengal Class 12 to be effective from the2025-26 academic year.
First language subjects will include English-A and Bengali-A, Hindi-A, Nepali-A, URDU, Santhali, Odia, Telugu, or Punjabi. Whereas second language subjects will comprise of English B, and Bengali-B, Hindi-B, alternative English, or Nepali-B. There are three subject combinations allowed for WB HS Class 12 exam 2025-26.
