26% increase in enrollments for apprenticeship scheme; maximum from Maharashtra
NAPS scheme saw over 28 lakh enrollments of apprentices so far. 9,31,406 enrolled in the current financial year.

NEW DELHI: There has been a 26.08 percent increase in the enrollment of apprentices in India under the National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme (NAPS) this year. Most of the apprentices are from Maharashtra followed by Tamil Nadu. The apprenticeship scheme was first launched in 2016 and has been extended as NAPS 2.
Under the scheme, students get training and a stipend of Rs 1,500 through Direct benefit Transfer (DBT) every month. The National Skill Development Corporation is responsible for managing the programme including the distribution of stipend and organizing awareness campaigns, trade fairs (melas), workshops, seminars, and other events for engagement.
A total of 35,333 apprentices enrolled in the programme in the financial year 2018-19 which has increased to 9,31,406 in the current financial year. This is over 26% higher than the previous financial year’s enrollment of 7,38,704 apprentices. This increase represents a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 74.76% over the five-year period, as per an official statement.
2,63,239 apprentices enrolled from Maharashtra followed by 1,01,519 from Tamil Nadu, 83,611 from Gujarat, 78,497 from Karnataka, and 71,378 from Uttar Pradesh.

NAPS beneficiaries
Ranjana from Madhya Pradesh enrolled for an apprenticeship in lab technology and got employment after training.
Vishal, hailing from Uttar Pradesh, participated in an apprenticeship programme and got a job as Assembly Line Operator.
Another apprentice from Uttar Pradesh, Shivam enrolled in an automotive course and became an Automotive CNC Machining Technician at an Aurangabad-based automobile engineering company.
