Aligarh Muslim University City School renamed ‘Raja Mahendra Pratap Singh AMU City School’

NEW DELHI: The Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) City School has been renamed as Raja Mahendra Pratap Singh AMU City School, the university announced on social media.

“The school has been re-named to honour Raja Mahendra Pratap Singh, notable AMU alumnus, Indian freedom fighter, journalist, social reformer, writer, revolutionary and President in the Provisional Government of India, which served as the Indian Government in exile during World War I from Kabul in 1915,” the university said in a statement.

Abdul Hamid, AMU Registrar said, “The decision to rename the school was taken in the light of resolution number 28 of the ordinary meeting of the Executive Council held on March 22, 2021.”

AMU Vice Chancellor, Professor Tariq Mansoor said: “With the renaming, AMU pays tribute to Raja Mahendra Pratap, who attended the Muhammadan Anglo-Oriental College in Aligarh, which later became the Aligarh Muslim University. Raja Mahendra Pratap’s name is counted among the prominent alumni of the university. His father and grandfather were close to the educationist and reformer Sir Syed Ahmad Khan”.

Meanwhile, President RamNath Kovind, being the visitor of AMU, has appointed his nominees to the executive council of the university.

The nominees are Professor Fazul Rahaman (Director, UGC Human Resource Development Centre, Maulana Azad National Urdu University, Hyderabad), Professor Umesh Kadam (Centre for Historical Studies, School of Social Sciences, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi) and Professor Geeta Singh (Centre for Professional Development in Higher Education, Delhi University, New Delhi), as per an official AMU statement.
