Allahabad University revamps PhD tenure, re-registration rules; adds special provisions for women

The University of Allahabad (UoA) has revised rules for PhD duration, extension, and re-registration, adding special provisions for women scholars. The revised rules have been implemented as per the UGC Regulations 2022, and approval of the vice chancellor Sangita Srivastava, streamlining regulations for scholars enrolled before and after November 7, 2022.
According to the official Allahabad University notice, the PhD programme shall be for a minimum duration of three years, including coursework, and a maximum duration of six years from the date of enrolment in the PhD programme. After three years, an extension of two years can be granted by DPC up to the date that they complete five years after enrollment.
Once a PhD scholar completes five years, they may be allowed a one-time extension up to six years from enrollment. No additional extension is permitted.
The new guidelines for AU PhD scholars supersede the earlier notification dated Feb 20, 2024.
AU PhD Scholars: Special provisions for women, PwD
According to the official UoA notice, women scholars and persons with disabilities (PwD) with more than 40% disability) may be granted a one-time special extension by the university VC, allowing them to complete their PhD within a maximum of eight years.
Notably, scholars who have exceeded the permitted duration (six or eight years and special extension ) will have their registration cancelled; however, they can re-register without appearing for the CRET exam. Re-registered candidates must submit their thesis within 24 months and pay the required fees.
Additionally, women PhD scholars are entitled to up to 240 days of maternity or child care leave during their programme.
