The Assam State School Education Board has issued a notice for all institutions affiliated under Division 1 informing that the Class 9 students can study General Mathematics and General Science in English medium even if their remaining subjects are being studied in another medium. Official clarification was issued on May 16, 2026. However, the provision will apply only if schools have the facility to teach the two subjects in English medium.

The board further stated that as the registration process for Class 9 students for the academic session 2026–27 is almost complete, and students opting to study General Maths and General Science in English medium will not require any changes in their registration cards. Ahead of the online registration process, schools were instructed to collect necessary details and documents from students seeking registration in Class 9. Schools have been asked to submit student details through a Data Capture Sheet, along with passport-size photographs with white background, student signatures, Aadhaar numbers and APAAR IDs. Institutions were also directed to upload photocopies of students’ birth certificates on the registration portal.

The notice specifies that mentioning any medium during the registration process of Class 9 would not create any issue in future. Once promoted to class 10, students will be asked to fill subject-wise medium details separately to ensure proper evaluation of answer scripts. The notice was signed by the Secretary of the Assam State School Education Board, Division-I, Guwahati.
