NEW DELHI: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the Assam Government will implement National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 from April 1, 2022 across the state, as per a Hindustan Times report. Under the policy, all the high schools will be converted to senior secondary schools. Biswa Sarma said that the process of implementing the policy will be completed by March next year.

According to the report, the Chief Minister said: "The state government is gearing up to implement the New Education Policy (NEP) from April 1, 2022. Under NEP, all high schools would be upgraded to senior secondary school. The government would upgrade the academic infrastructure of the educational institutions for this purpose within a year."

Sarma further added that the state government will keep adding new provisions of NEP to the education system every year in order to upgrade the whole education system in the next five years, as per the report.

He also mentioned that while subjects like science and maths would be taught in the English language, other subjects will be taught in the mother tongue, the report said.

Recently, the Assam government has decided to remove the 75 percent quota for state board students from urban colleges, according to reports. Assam had introduced the quota for students passing from schools affiliated to the state board, Assam Higher Secondary Education Council (AHSEC) but withdrew it after facing opposition and protest from parents and students, as per the Times of India report.
