BHU vice-chancellor inaugurates FLY programme for assistant professors

NEW DELHI: Banaras Hindu University (BHU) vice-chancellor Professor Sudhir Kumar Jain inaugurated the Finding the Leader in You (FLY) programme aimed at building leadership capabilities among faculty members of BHU. The inaugural session was organized at Malaviya Moolya Anusheelan Kendra. The FLY programme is being conducted in collaboration with Competitiveness Mindset Institute, a research and education institute based in the United States.

FLY programme is aimed at inculcating five most needed and unique skills like conscientiousness, perseverance, innovativeness, taking initiative and problem solving. The programme helps in developing a foundation for ethical leadership and professionalism. It focuses on building communication skills to boost confidence and overcome cultural traits that hamper growth and effective communication.

The VC said that faculty members of BHU must prepare themselves for the leadership of the future and the university is committed to make new opportunities available in this regard. Professor Jain said that BHU can play a leading role in producing future leaders, those in the field of education in particular.

Speaking at the session, the VC said that besides carrying out quality teaching and research, teachers should also have excellent leadership qualities, as all these three factors play an important role in the growth of an institution. He said that he strongly believes in young people and said there should be greater efforts to nurture and upskill them. BHU has taken a number of initiatives to encourage and promote young energy, added Jain. He exuded confidence that the FLY programme will greatly benefit faculty members.

Uma Oza, director, Quality and Staff Development, CMI, said that FLY uses cutting edge active learning techniques. The programme is highly participatory and the learning takes place through exercises, fun activities, self-introspection and team work, she informed.
