BHU research scholar selected for UN training programme

UN training programme aims to strengthen women professionals’ leadership skills and knowledge in disaster risk reduction (DRR).
NEW DELHI: A Banaras Hindu University (BHU) research scholar has been selected for United Nations (UN) training programme. The BHU research scholar is Saumya Singh, JRF and Research Scholar in DST-Mahamana Center of Excellence in Climate Change Research, Institute of Environment and Sustainable Development, BHU.
Singh is pursuing her research under the supervision of Professor R K Mall. She is one of the five candidates selected from over 100 participants from around the world to participate in the second phase of the programme. She has been selected for UNITAR Hiroshima Women’s Leadership in Tsunami-based Disaster Risk Reduction Training Programme, which will be taking place between March 6 and 11 in Apia, Samoa.

The programme, as per a BHU statement, is supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Japan, Japan government. The UN training programme aims to strengthen women professionals’ leadership skills and knowledge in disaster risk reduction (DRR), to better prevent, prepare, confront, and recover from tsunami-based disasters.

It also seeks to develop an inclusive approach to DRR contextualized to the needs of their communities and countries, encouraging effective communication, and development of multi-stakeholder coalitions. The programme aims to contribute to SDGs quality education, gender equality, reduced inequalities, sustainable cities and communities, and peace, justice and strong institutions.
