BITS Design School, RMIT University, Melbourne sign pact; creates international study pathway for students

The Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS), Design School, Mumbai campus, has signed an agreement with RMIT University, Melbourne, under which students will have an opportunity to complete their last two years of study at RMIT. The five-year articulation agreement will create a formal pathway for BITS students to transfer and carry credits in the foreign university’s Bachelor of Industrial Design (Honours) programme.

As part of the partnership , students, who will complete their first-two years of the Design (honours) programme at BITS Design school Mumbai campus, will be eligible to transfer to RMIT to complete their course.

The technology institute will transfer up to 5 students each year, with the intake to be reviewed after two years, as per the official statement.

Eight BITS design school students to study at RMIT University

“On transfer, students will be awarded 192 credit points toward the RMIT program and will complete their remaining coursework, including design studios, a design honours project, and a major from four options: Design for Advanced Manufacture, Design for Sustainability, Interaction Design, and Design for Sound Interfaces and Environments at RMIT's Melbourne City and Brunswick, Victoria campuses,” the document read.

Students who began the BITS design school programme in July 2025 are the first cohort to be eligible for transfer under the agreement. They can move to RMIT from semester 2 in 2027, or semester 1 in 2028, with an expected completion in 2029, it added.

According to the institute, the global exposure has been an integral part of BITS Design School’s vision since its inception, with the ambition of preparing students to engage with international design practices, perspectives and opportunities.

The relationship between the two education institutes continues to grow stronger with the articulation agreement.

Recently, seven students from RMIT came to BITS Design school in July, 2026 and eight students from the BITS Design School will go for the spring semester exchange to RMIT, it added.
