BJP seeks CBI probe into Jharkhand recruitment exam irregularities, assembly adjourned

RANCHI: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLAs created an uproar in the Jharkhand assembly over alleged irregularities in recruitment exams, forcing Rabindra Nath Mahato, speaker, to adjourn the House for the day. The incident took place on the second day of the monsoon session, August 4, 2026.

As soon as the proceedings began, opposition MLAs entered the well of the House and raised slogans demanding the resignation of the chief minister, Hemant Soren. They also demanded a CBI probe under the supervision of a court-monitored committee.

Rabindra Nath Mahato repeatedly appealed to the protesting MLAs to return to their seats; however, when the disruption continued during question hour, he adjourned the House till 12:30 pm. The uproar continued after the assembly reconvened, following which the speaker adjourned the proceedings for the day.

Opposition demands probe

Leader of the opposition, Babulal Marandi, reiterated the demands for a CBI investigation into the alleged irregularities. Congress, however, opposed the demand, claiming that the central agency had lost its credibility.

According to sources, Pradeep Yadav, Congress legislature party leader, said, "We are also concerned over students' issues. The CID is investigating the matter. You (opposition) are demanding a probe by CBI, but the central agency has already lost its credibility and is acting as a tool of the Centre". Suvidya Kumar, higher and technical education minister, also added that the government was aware of the concerns and wanted to resolve them

Meanwhile, protests by students and job aspirants entered the 14th day on Friday with six demonstrators continuing a hunger strike. Two student unions have also announced plans to march towards the assembly. The protestors are demanding cancellation of the 14th Jharkhand PSC Civil Services Examination (JPSC) and seeking reforms in both JPSC and Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC) examinations.
