NEW DELHI: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has revised the curriculum of Classes 9 to 12, reducing the workload of students. The CBSE has "rationalized" the syllabus, reducing upto 30% of the content but retaining the "core concepts", the human resource development minister, Ramesh Pokhriyal 'Nishank' announced on Tuesday.
The decision to revise the curriculum is due to the spread of COVID-19 pandemic in the country, there has been a loss of classroom teaching due to closure of schools.
“Therefore the Board has decided to revise the syllabi for classes IX-XII for the academic session 2020-21. Considering the importance of achieving the level of learning, the syllabus has been rationalised to the extent possible by retaining the core concepts,” says a circular issued by CBSE director (academics), Joseph Emmanuel.

In June, Pokhriyal had invited suggestions from various stakeholders on reducing the school curriculum. Pokhriyal, making the announcement on Twitter, shared that the HRD ministry had received 1,500 suggestions on this. He wrote: “Looking at the extraordinary situation prevailing in the country and the world, #CBSE was advised to revise the curriculum and reduce course load for the students of Class 9th to 12th.”
He also added that considering the importance of learning achievement, it has been decided to rationalize syllabus up to 30% by retaining the core concepts.
CBSE has also asked school heads and teachers to ensure that the topics that have been reduced are also explained to the students to the extent required to connect different topics. However, the reduced syllabus will not be part of the topics for internal assessment and year-end board examination.
