CBSE directs schools to roll out three-language policy’s R3 structure for Class 6 within 7 days

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has directed all affiliated schools to introduce the three-language policy’s R3 structure for Class 6 under the CBSE scheme of studies 2026-27 and has asked to ensure compliance within seven days from the date of issuance of the circular.

In the official CBSE notice, the board acknowledged that while the textbooks for the R3 languages - drawn from those enumerated in the Constitution of India - are being formulated, schools are advised to start teaching R3 immediately using the locally available books and materials aligned with the NCFSE 2023 competencies.

“It has been learnt that many schools have already initiated the implementation of R3 as per the Scheme of Studies. All remaining schools are hereby directed to ensure compliance within seven days from the date of issuance of this circular,” the official CBSE notice said.

The National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCFSE 2023) highlights the importance of multilingualism and advises teaching two native Indian languages under the R1, R2, R3 structure, aiming to promote linguistic proficiency, cultural understanding, and national integration among students.

CBSE urges schools to submit R3 options

As per the CBSE’s guidelines, the board has urged all the schools to finalise and notify their respective regional offices of their chosen R3 language and update the details in the OASIS portal.

Notably, only the R3 languages introduced in Class 6 by a school will be available as options in Classes 9 and 10 for that school.

The board has further directed regional officers to approach schools to collect the details of R3 options being offered and maintain a record of R3 implementation in schools under their jurisdiction.

“All schools are advised to introduce R3 earnestly and without any further delay. Schools must take all necessary measures to ensure immediate and effective implementation,” the official CBSE notice adds.

CBSE Curriculum 2026-27: AI, CT for Classes 3 to 8

Recently, CBSE introduced Computational Thinking (CT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) syllabus for Classes 3 to 8, which has been prepared by faculty from IIT Madras, Azim Premji University, Dhirubhai Ambani School, along with other subject experts.

For Classes 3 to 5, the computational thinking (CT) component will be added to the curriculum for mathematics and The World Around Us subjects, and for Classes 6 to 8, it has been included in all subjects through worksheet and project-based learning.
