Central University of Kashmir Protest: Students demand fair fee structure, improved facilities

NEW DELHI: Kashmir University students of the Tulmulla campus held a protest on Thursday, demanding a fair fee structure and improved facilities. The students raised slogans holding placards that read, “Fee Hike, Roll Back” and “Education is a Right, Not, a Privilege.”

Students also raised their voices against poor infrastructure stating that the hostel accommodations are insufficient, forcing many to either rent rooms or travel from their homes daily. Additionally, they highlighted the inadequate campus amenities, such as clean drinking water, functional washrooms, and new buildings.

As per reports from Greater Kashmir, the protest led to the suspension of classes at the Tulmulla campus as students closed the campus gates, demanding immediate attention from the concerned authorities. The protesting students emphasized that their primary reason for the demonstration was the substantial fee increase, which they argue is unjustified given the poor infrastructure and lack of basic amenities.

"Education is our right, not a privilege. The alleged fee hike at the Central University of Kashmir threatens our access to learning. We demand transparency & fair treatment for all students,” an X user wrote.

“Students of @cukmrofficial are protesting against fee hikes and lack of basic necessities. No administration has addressed their demands, leaving them to suffer in 30°C heat. I urge the @EduMinOfIndia, @OfficeOfLGJandK, &CUK administration to resolve this issue urgently,” former president of @cuk_stdt_union posted on X.

According to Kashmir Life , after a visit to the protest site and efforts to calm the students, Dean of Legal Studies and Chief Proctor, Farooq Ahmed Mir stated, "The administration is currently examining the issue and will make a decision soon. We appeal to you to suspend the protest until a decision is made.
