Centre receives proposals for 5 new NIFTs from states, UT

NEW DELHI: The Centre has received proposals from states and a union territory to establish five new National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) campuses in the country, the minister of state for textiles Darshana Jardosh told Lok Sabha.

Members of Parliament asked whether state governments including Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra along with Andaman and Nicobar Islands have requested the Union government to establish more NIFT campuses. Answering the question, the minister gave the details of the states and the proposed locations.

According to the ministry, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Tripura, Dadra & Nagar Haveli and Daman & Diu have requested for setting up NIFT campuses in their states.

The ministry further said that the proposals of states and union territories were examined and they have been requested to provide adequate land and financial support as per the prescribed NIFT policy for establishment of new campuses.

“In respect of Daman & Diu, Board of Governors of NIFT in its 56th meeting held on July 4, 2022, has accorded in-principle approval to the proposal for establishment of NIFT Campus at Daman. However, the response from other states with required financial commitment have not been received,” the reply read.

NIFT has strategic agreement and partnership with 32 leading International Fashion Institute and Organisations which enables students to pursue a semester abroad or undertake a secured internship.

The ministry informed that there are 17 NIFT institutes in the country and also gave details of the year of establishment.

Details of NIFT campuses along with year of establishment
