University of Colorado Denver receives UGC letter of intent to establish a degree-granting campus in Hyderabad. First student cohort expected in August 2027.

The University of Colorado Denver (CU Denver) has received a letter of intent from the University Grants Commission (UGC) to establish a new campus in Hyderabad, making it the first American public university authorised to establish a degree-granting location in India and the first foreign university to establish a campus in Telangana.
The proposed CU Denver Hyderabad campus is expected to welcome its first batch of students in August 2027, subject to completion of the required regulatory processes and approvals. The university said the campus will focus on providing globally connected, career-oriented education while contributing to India's higher education ecosystem.
The Hyderabad campus will initially offer academic pathways in high-demand areas including business, computing, engineering and analytics. The programmes will focus on applied learning, interdisciplinary education, student outcomes and workforce relevance.

According to CU Denver, the Hyderabad campus will combine academic learning with hands-on and experiential opportunities. The university plans to prepare students with subject knowledge as well as practical skills needed for careers in a changing global economy.
The campus will draw on CU Denver's strengths as a public urban research university, with an emphasis on academic quality, career readiness, social mobility and applied learning.
Additional programmes will be proposed to the UGC for approval from the second year onwards, the university said.
Kenneth T. Christensen, chancellor of CU Denver, said the proposed campus builds on the university's longstanding connection with students from India.
Christensen said, “Expanding access to high-quality education has long been central to CU Denver’s vision and goals. Our plans in Hyderabad build on that commitment, as well as our longstanding connection with students from India who have been part of the CU Denver community for decades."
He added, "We now have an opportunity to extend that connection and bring our unique experience to students in India—combining rigorous academics, career-aligned learning, and real-world experience that prepare students for meaningful careers and contributions to their communities.”

Global education company Emeritus will serve as CU Denver's strategic joint venture partner in India. It will support the university in establishing and expanding the Hyderabad campus, particularly across key non-academic functions.
Ashwin Damera, co-founder and CEO of Emeritus, said the proposed campus will bring globally relevant education closer to Indian students.
Damera said, “The proposed University of Colorado Denver Hyderabad marks an important step in bringing globally relevant education closer to students in India. CU Denver’s focus on applied learning, interdisciplinary education, and career readiness is particularly relevant to the aspirations of today’s students and the needs of a rapidly evolving workforce."
He added, "The initiative will create opportunities for students and provide greater access to an education that is both academically rigorous and closely connected to the world of work.”

The proposed campus is aligned with the priorities of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, particularly its focus on multidisciplinary education, internationalisation, learner outcomes and career readiness.
Established in 1973, CU Denver is governed by the University of Colorado Board of Regents and has around 14,000 students. Its alumni network includes more than 100,000 graduates across over 100 countries.
The university is classified as an R1 research institution by the Carnegie Commission on Higher Education, reflecting very high research activity. It also focuses on research, civic engagement, social and economic mobility and workforce-oriented academic programmes.
CU Denver said it will continue working through the regulatory process and engage with academic, industry and other stakeholders as it develops the Hyderabad campus. The university is targeting August 2027 for the arrival of its first cohort of students.
