Coronavirus: AMU postpones distance learning exams

NEW DELHI: Aligarh Muslim University in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, has postponed exams for its distance education programme as a precaution against the spread of coronavirus. The exams will now begin on April 1.
The Indo-Asian News Service reported on March 9, that exams at its distance learning centres in Aligarh (Uttar Pradesh), Kerala, West Bengal, Bihar and Delhi have been postponed. They were to begin on March 15. The AMU spokesperson, M Shafey Kidwai told Careers360 that all other exams will be held as per schedule, including the entrance tests for the school.
6,000 students
Nafees Ansari, director of AMU’s Distance Learning Centre said that 6,000 students are enrolled in the four degree programmes – Bcom, MCom, Bachelor of Library Science and BSc Computer Application. They will now start writing the exams on April 1, reported IANS .
Ansari told IANS that this was in response to the University Grants Commission’s instructions to all Vice-Chancellors which included limiting “large gatherings” on campus and contact with individuals with a travel history to places that have reported cases of Covid-19, the disease caused by novel coronavirus.
The university has also postponed all annual hall functions and cultural programs and no permissions will be granted for functions at Kennedy auditorium, the IANS reported.
Advisories and instructions
Last week, Calcutta University barred students and faculty from travelling to countries from where coronavirus infections have been reported.
School examination boards , Central Board of Secondary Education and the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations both issued advisories.
So far, 41 confirmed cases of coronavirus infections have been reported in India, including that of a three-year-old child in Kerala.
