NEW DELHI : As the demand for hand-sanitisers has skyrocketed due to the coronavirus pandemic, teachers and students of Indian Institute of Technology- BHU have found a “home-made” solution.
Marshal Dhayal, a teacher at IIT-BHU, and two PhD students, Juhi Jaiswal and Devdutt Sharma have released a video demonstrating how hand sanitisers can be made at home. Dhayal is a member of the school of biomedical engineering at BHU.
The hand sanitisers, Dhayal shows in the video, are made with Ethanol – 100 percent alcohol compound – mixed with any form of gel or Glycerol, a gel like substance.
He explained, “Since, Ethanol easily evaporates (at room temperature) it has to be mixed with gel which can be bought at any medical store,”
Aloe Vera is also an alternative that can be used to mix with ethanol, he informs in the video. He suggests adding rose petals to reduce the pungent smell of the mixture.
The World Health Organisation or WHO has also issued a guide to local production of hand-rub formula. An alcohol-based sanitiser, according to WHO, is most effective in killing bacteria causing coronavirus.
Two women researchers at Indian Institute of Technology-Hyderabad, or IIT Hyderabad , also produced their own sanitisers. The lab-made hand sanitizer has been made for the institute’s own community.
Amid acute shortage, students in colleges of Assam and Nagaland have started preparing hand sanitisers locally, reported The Indian Express. Following specifications set by WHO, students of Nagaland's Kohima Science College prepared and donated a few bottles to nearby offices. Students in Assam also prepared sanitisers for the community, the report further added.
