COVID-19: J&K schools' association demands restoration of 4G services

NEW DELHI:The Private Schools Association of Jammu and Kashmir has moved the Supreme Court seeking restoration of 4G services in the region.

The Tribune reported that the umbrella body of over 2200 schools contended that lack of internet connectivity violated the students’ fundamental right to education.

The petition challenged the orders passed by the central government since January 18, restricting the speed of internet in the region.

With almost all academic institutions taking to online teaching due to the lockdown forced by the coronavirus outbreak, lack of internet speed hampers learning in the mostly mountainous region.

Public Interest Litigation

In another Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by the Foundation for Media Professionals, the Supreme Court has asked the Centre and the Jammu and Kashmir administration to reply within a week, the fortnightly Frontline reported.

The Economic Times reported that Senior Advocate Huzefa Ahmadi, appearing for the petitioner contended that in view of prevailing COVId-19 lockdown, online classes can be conducted smoothly only through better internet connectivity,

Currently, the internet speed in Jammu and Kashmir region is restricted to 2G, which has a slow internet speed.
