COVID cases are once again on the rise across India. As of June 6, the country has reported 5,364 active cases. In response to the growing numbers, several states have issued COVID-19 guidelines for schools, colleges, and other educational institutions to prevent the spread of the virus.
COVID is growing milder with time but an occasional surge in cases is expected because the virus that causes it is now endemic and constantly evolving, say scientists while assuring that there is no cause for concern.
Addressing worries over the rising incidence of the disease in various parts of the country, the experts noted that it appears to be a result of waning immunity combined with seasonal factors such as temperature extremes.
According to the global guidelines, the World Health Organisation (WHO) recommended avoiding relying on restrictions and lockdowns. Instead, it asked countries to update the guidelines for better preparedness and continue vaccination. In view of this, the chances of schools closing remain low.
Here’s how state governments plan to manage the COVID-19 risks in schools, colleges, and other educational institutions.
Kerala schools - The state is the worst-hit with over 1,400 cases recorded so far. The state health department has issued revised guidelines recently, making masks mandatory for high-risk groups and crowded places. It has also instructed all government and private health care centres to conduct compulsory mock drills to assess preparedness.
Odisha schools - The state government has advised schools to keep health and safety on top priority when they reopen after the summer vacation. Students with cold and fever have been asked to wear masks at schools and those with serious symptoms have been advised to not come to schools and isolate themselves.
Schools will reopen on June 19. The state has reported 23 COVID cases in the last eight days, of which 4 have recovered, while 19 are under quarantine at home.
Karnataka schools - A week ago, the state government asked parents to not send their children to school if they are suffering from cold, fever, cough, or any other symptoms. It also advised teachers and non-teaching staff to take precautionary measures like hand hygiene, cough etiquette and other Covid-appropriate behavior.
A total of 451 cases were reported in Karnataka and the death toll rises to seven as of today.
Telangana schools – Classes will resume on June 12 after summer break. The Telangana government has reportedly asked schools to allocate two isolated rooms for COVID related emergencies.
