NEW DELHI: Schools and colleges in several districts of Tamil Nadu will remain closed today in view of the heavy rains. The state government declared a holiday in educational institutions in Chennai, Cuddalore, Villupuram, Kancheepuram, Thiruvallur and Vellore after the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) warned of heavy rain and winds.

Meanwhile in neighbouring Puducherry, the territorial administration declared holiday for all schools and colleges in Puducherry and Karaikal regions on Friday and Saturday after the IMD issued a cyclone warning.

Severe cyclonic storm Mandous will cross the coast between north Tamil Nadu and south Andhra Pradesh around night and early tomorrow, the regional weather office said. Parts of Tamil Nadu witnessed rains under the influence of the system in the Bay of Bengal, including Chennai.

“Deep Depression over SW Bay of Bengal about 410 km east of Trincomalee . To move west-northwestwards and intensify further gradually into a Cyclonic Storm and cross north Tamilnadu, Puducherry and adjoining south AP coast between Puducherry and Sriharikota around 10th December,” said IMD in a tweet.

According to weather reports, light to moderate rainfall is expected at most places and heavy to very heavy showers at a few places and extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places in north coastal Tamil Nadu, Puducherry today. Isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely in adjoining south coastal Andhra Pradesh and north interior Tamil Nadu and Rayalaseema.
