Delhi HC issues notice to Centre, Delhi Police for JMI brutality

NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court has issued a notice to the Union Government and the Delhi Police in response to a petition filed by a student of Jamia Millia Islamia University (JMI) on Monday.

According to Bar and Bench, the petition has been filed by Shayan Mujeeb who has claimed compensation for the injuries he suffered by the hands of Delhi Police on December 15, 2019.

A section of JMI students staged a protest against Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019, which escalated into an altercation between students and the police when the protests were joined by outsiders who torched buses. The police later said that no student was involved in the arson. The police broke into the university library and indiscriminately beat the students reading inside.

A CCTV footage of the Old Reading Hall for the MA/MPhil Section at the JMI was released early on Sunday. The video, circulated by the Jamia Coordination Committee which is coordinating the protests, showed the police entering and beating students reading in the hall.

Mujeeb, who was in the library during the incident, has asked for a compensation of Rs 2 crores, Bar and Bench further reported.

On December 15, in response to the police brutality, the students of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) also protested. To quell the protest, the police threw tear gas shells and lathi-charged the students at AMU.

Soon university campuses across the country came out in support of JMI and AMU students starting India’s most talked-about resistance movement against CAA.
