'Fight for secular campus': AISA asks DU proctor to treat communal events the way she treats protests

NEW DELHI: The All India Students Association (AISA) today wrote a letter to the Delhi University proctor and Dean of Arts Faculty demanding to curb and regularise communal programmes organised on the campus.

In a letter dated March 28, AISA said “We must keep vigilance against hatemongers in our campus!” The statement comes in the background of “increasing number of events hosted at Arts Faculty which have raised communally charged slogans under the garb of worship”.

“On last Wednesday, a group without permission from the authorities held a ‘pooja’ programme in the Arts Faculty- Law Faculty complex and various songs and slogans were heard with extremely vile, communal overtones,” AISA stated.

The students group asked the DU administration to keep a check on such programmes and deal with them they same way “they deal genuine students protest”.

It further informed that a similar communal event was planned for today and was scheduled to start at 2 PM. “We appeal to you to protect the secular nature of the University and put a stop to such events,” it added.

On March 19, the DU SFI unit in a statement said, “The 3 day Literature Festival held at Ramjas College was nothing but an event managed to host only RSS ideologues to propagate Hindutva agenda.”

When SFI activists reached the event, the other students group started beating the protesters while raising slogans like "Jai Shri Ram" and also hurling abusive remarks at the students. “What was shocking was the role of the security officials who were mute spectators and denied to even stop the goons from attacking the dissenters,” it said.
