NEW DELHI: The University of Delhi (UoD) has made a provision to reserve seats for orphans in all undergraduate and postgraduate programmes from the next academic session. Every year, thousands of orphan children who are unable to continue their higher education owing to financial constraints will be given the opportunity to do so. The decision was made during the Executive Council meeting held the day before.

As per an official release, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Delhi Professor Yogesh Singh said that in all the colleges and departments of the university, one seat each will be reserved for orphan boys and girls in all classes at both UG and PG levels.

Giving detailed information about this scheme, the Vice-Chancellor of DU said that such students will be exempted from payment of all kinds of fees, which will also include exemption from payment of their hostel fee, examination fee and other compulsory fees. Students to be considered for admission will have to comply with all relevant provisions of the university. The expenditure incurred for the admission and continuation of studies of such students in the university or its colleges will be met from the University Welfare Fund or the College Students Welfare Fund.

The Vice-Chancellor also said that the University of Delhi, being a central university of national and international repute, has been responsible for providing education to the students seeking higher education without any discrimination on any grounds.

He further added that the university understands the importance of providing higher education to every section of society, including those students who have unfortunately lost their parents and become orphans. It is the social responsibility of the university to help such students. Recognizing this responsibility, the University of Delhi has contemplated creating one additional seat for orphan students (male and female) in each programme of study at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

As per the Vice-Chancellor, this initiative would be a positive step towards the achievement of 50 per cent GER in higher education by the year 2035 as envisaged in the National Education Policy 2020 and would link the ongoing efforts with its Institutional Social Responsibility (ISR) in the centenary year of the university.
