NEW DELHI: Medical interns in Rajasthan are demanding a uniform remuneration at par with their counterparts across the country. They are being paid just Rs 234 per day. Interns in other states are paid anywhere between Rs 400 and Rs 500 per day.

Rajasthan is one of the states which has seen some measure of success in controlling the spread of COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus.

The interns took to social media, saying, “We demand uniform stipend to Rajasthan interns”. They added: “We demand what we deserve.”

The interns have been demanding equal pay under the hashtag #One_Nation_One_Stipend.

Doctors demand

Earlier on April 28, the United Resident and Doctors Association of India had written to the Rajasthan chief minister, Ashok Gehlot, requesting an increment in the stipend of intern doctors of the state.

Stating that an increase in the stipend amount will only boost the confidence of the young doctors who are fighting the pandemic, the letter said: “Intern doctors are feeling like bonded labourer as they are getting just Rs 233/day in Rajasthan.”

Uttar Pradesh and Punjab too had earlier demanded an increase in the stipend amount of interns. Punjab has already increased the amount.
