Germany has over 42,000 Indian students: Ambassador Philipp Ackermann

NEW DELHI: Germany has the highest number of foreign students from India with over 42,000 students, German Ambassador to India Philipp Ackermann said on Thursday, August 10. With 25 percent rise within a year, India becomes number 1 group of foreign students in Germany, the ambassador added.

"Great! 42,000+ Indian students in Germany, 25 % more within one year. India now no. 1 group of foreign students in Germany, much faster than expected! Germany is popular among Indian students - and Indian students are popular in Germany, I hear from professors very often," Ackermann wrote on X (former Twitter).

India and Germany signed an agreement last year on comprehensive migration and mobility partnership, facilitate the two-way movement of students, professionals and researchers.

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) also offers a wide range of scholarships to the Indian students and scholars. DAAD has been offering these scholarships for over 60 years now. In addition to projects by institutions, the exchange service also funds “bi-directional movement” of scholars and academics between Germany and India.

Public universities in Germany do not charge tuition fees leaving the students to pay only their living expenses. As German universities famous for technology, programmes on science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) are the most sought-after. As per data shared by DAAD India last year, around 80% Indian students were doing their masters in Germany with 10% each in UG and PhD programmes.
