NEW DELHI: University Grants Commission (UGC) has asked Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) to have affiliation with National Cadet Corps (NCC) troops in order to offer NCC as an elective subject. Furthermore, NCC as an elective subject can only be offered to students who are enrolled as NCC cadets.

The commission urged Higher Education Institutions to take appropriate measures for students in offering NCC as an elective subject.

UGC in academic year 2021 allowed all universities and autonomous colleges in India with existing NCC troops to introduce an NCC credit course as an elective. This initiative also extends to private colleges that have been allotted NCC under the Fully Self-Financed Scheme (FSFS).

However, the implementation of the credit course will be limited to the current capacity of NCC to provide trainers and training infrastructure, ensuring a smooth transition to the Credit Course System.

Enrolled students to receive NCC 'B' and 'C' certificates

Students enrolled as NCC cadets will benefit by earning academic credits for their NCC training and receiving NCC 'B' and 'C' certificates. This will also enable more students to take advantage of employment incentives and benefits offered under various Central and State Government schemes.

NCC has developed a standardised and universally applicable general elective credit course in alignment with NEP 2020. Comprehensive details of the NCC course design, along with rules and regulations, will be available on the DGNCC website. The UGC has also included a summary of the course design in their letter.
