SHIMLA: It will be a holiday on Monday in all government schools in Himachal Pradesh as students and teachers were required to attend school on Independence Day celebrations. Private schools can decide if they observe a compensatory holiday or not, officials said on Sunday.

This is as per instructions given by Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Friday. A notification issued by the Directorate of School Education on July 29 stated that all government schools in the state would remain open on August 15 to mark Independence Day .

In another notification issued late Saturday evening, August 17 will be observed as a holiday in all government schools in the state in view of the participation of students and teachers in Independence Day celebrations at school, subdivision, district and state levels.

Another notification said private schools that have celebrated Independence Day in their schools or participated in state or district-level functions could decide at their own level whether to observe a holiday on August 17.
