ICT Mumbai unveils centre for energy science and technology

ICT’s new centre to support India’s 100 GW nuclear target with cutting-edge research and academic-industry collaboration
MUMBAI: The Institute of Chemical Technology (ICT), Mumbai, has unveiled its new centre for Energy Science and Technology. The launch took place during a high-level conclave on Industry-Academia Partnership for nuclear science and technology development held at ICT’s KV Auditorium.
Bridging academia and industry
The announcement follows the central government’s recent budget, which allocated Rs 20,000 crore for nuclear R&D and set an ambitious target of 100 GW of nuclear power capacity by 2047. ICT’s new centre is positioned to be a national hub for advanced research, innovation, and talent development in nuclear energy.
“The academic community, in its pursuit of independent and original thought, plays a crucial role in shaping national policy,” said Dr Kakodkar, chancellor, Homi Bhabha National Institute (HBNI). “ICT’s leadership in advancing nuclear energy research is both timely and commendable.”

Academic excellence meets energy innovation
ICT aims to position the centre as a catalyst for India’s clean energy transition. The centre will focus on next-generation nuclear technologies, including Small Modular Reactors (SMRs), Micro Modular Reactors (MMRs), hydrogen generation, and accelerator-based systems, said the official statement.
Chancellor J B Joshi said, “India’s energy future depends on innovation and decisive action. ICT’s new centre will serve as a beacon of research, talent, and technology aligned with the national vision of sustainability and self-reliance.”
National institution with global aspirations
The centre for energy science and technology, spread over 23 acres at ICT Mumbai, will house laboratories, simulation facilities, and academic infrastructure. According to the institute, the centre is expected to focus on research, workforce training, and engagement with industry and policy stakeholders in the field of nuclear energy.
