IGNOU launches MBA in Healthcare and Hospital Management

Students with a bachelor’s degree with at least 50% marks can apply for the MBA HCHM programme.

NEW DELHI: The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has launched an MBA programme in health care and hospital management. The management programme aims to create a skilled workforce ready for employment in healthcare institutions, related organizations, and hospitals within both the private and public sectors. This initiative aims to provide effective support and ensure high-quality healthcare nationwide, including in remote areas.

Students having a bachelor degree of minimum three year’s duration with at least 50 percent marks (45% in case of candidates belonging to reserved category) are eligible to apply.

MBA HCHM credits, fee

The MBAHCHM programme includes 112 credits in four semesters. The first semester has seven core courses of four credits each. The second semester also has seven core courses of four credits each. The third and fourth semester comprise specialized courses.

The students are required to undertake a project and undergo a practical in the third semester. In the practical course, they will be posted in the hospitals or healthcare institutions and will undergo practical skills in a hospital setting. The students are also expected to complete a three-month internship in a healthcare-associated institution or hospital identified by them.

Applicants will be required to pay semester-wise fee which is Rs 15,500 for the first semester, Rs 15,500 for second, Rs 19,500 for third, and Rs 17,500 for fourth.

IGNOU said that with the help of this MBA programme, the learners will be able to

  • acquire theoretical knowledge and develop practical skills to apply scientific approach to management of people, materials, finance, communication and for organising work and managing resources.
  • learn modern management techniques like inventory control, economic order quantity (EOQ), operational research, organisational development, management information system etc.
  • plan in advance how to face the problems of hospital management, learn methods of problem solving and decision making.
  • assess the clinical and non-clinical needs of patient care, understanding the administrative and technical requirements of physicians and paramedical personnel.
  • apply the principles and functions of general management to various services to maximize efficiency.
  • learn planning and designing needs of physical facilities of hospitals.
  • learn the principles and practices of health management and its interactive roles with the medical care in hospitals.
  • use the epidemiological techniques to study the prevalence of diseases and its pattern in the community to plan health care services.
  • learn to utilize biostatistics in planning, decision making professional services review and in medico-administrative research.
