IGNOU launches MSc Climate Change programme; admissions open till July 15

The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has launched a Master of Science (MSc) in Climate Change to offer a postgraduate programme dedicated to climate change studies, according to an official statement. Interested and eligible students can apply for the IGNOU MSc Climate Change course at ignouadmission.samarth.edu.in until July 15.

The university said the new programme has been introduced to deal with the growing impact of climate change on ecosystems, economies, and human life, and to help students develop sustainable and practical solutions to climate-related problems.

“IGNOU has achieved an important milestone by becoming the first Open University in India to launch the Master of Science (MSc) in Climate Change programme. This is an important step towards tackling one of the biggest global challenges of our time,” the university said in a media release.

IGNOU MSc Climate Change admission 2026

The MSc Climate Change programme is a multidisciplinary course that helps students understand climate science, climate risks, ways to adapt and reduce climate change, environmental policies, and sustainable development.

According to IGNOU , the course includes many topics such as climate change and water resources, energy systems, agriculture, disaster risk reduction, biodiversity conservation, waste management, circular economy, health, ecosystem restoration, environmental laws, governance, and tools used to assess climate change.

The university said the programme aims to give students the knowledge and practical skills needed to solve real-life climate problems and help achieve national and global sustainability goals.

The programme is coordinated by V Venkatramanan and Shachi Shah, who are experts in environment, sustainability, and climate change studies.

IGNOU MSc Climate Change: Eligibility, duration

Candidates who have completed a graduation degree in any subject can apply for IGNOU MSc Climate Change admission. The programme lasts for two years and has 80 credits.

IGNOU has also given an exit option after the first year. Students who complete the first year successfully can get a Post Graduate Diploma in Climate Change (PGDCCC).

The university has invited graduates, working professionals, policymakers, teachers, and anyone interested in environmental issues to join the programme.

“This new programme shows IGNOU’s commitment to improving climate education and preparing a new generation of professionals who can solve climate-related problems using science-based and sustainable solutions,” the university said.

The registration fee is non-refundable, and refunds are given only if admission is cancelled before confirmation. If cancelled after confirmation, 15% of the programme fee (up to Rs 2,000) will be deducted, and no refund is allowed after 60 days from the last date of admission.
