NEW DELHI: The Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Calcutta is going to have a 10-storey new hostel consisting of 200 rooms along with new academic blocks. The hostel which is designed by the architect Hafeez Contractor will be completed in two years and will cost nearly Rs 246 crore.

“Proposed Hostel Building, Service Building & Substation Building will be a G+9 storied building, having built-up area of 32556 sq m consisting of 726 rooms with common washrooms, 200 rooms with attached washrooms with all modern amenities to secure GRIHA 5 Star rating at a proposed cost of Rs 245.88 crore,” the institute said in an official statement.

Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan will virtually lay the foundation stone for the hostel today, January 31. A Bhumi Puja Ceremony will also be held for the hostel building.

Oldest IIM; new building

IIM Calcutta is the oldest IIM in the country and currently functions from a green campus of 135 acres in the southern part of Kolkata. The institute now aims to collaborate with national and international institutions and attract international students.

“Since the advent of the IIM Act 2017, the Institute has revised its “Vision” and “Mission”. Although IIM Calcutta is the first IIM with triple accreditation (AACSB, AMBA and EQUIS), among the corner stones of the new Vision are for the Institute to be an international center of excellence with high global ranking in all aspects of management education, research and practice. Hence, there is now a need for us to collaborate with national and international institutions to develop global networks. We aim to attract a significant number of international scholars to our campus,” IIM Calcutta added.

The institute feels that there is an urgent need to upgrade the infrastructure, so that IIM Calcutta can retain its position on the national as well as global level. Hence, infrastructure norms such as carbon zero, ability to efficiently support and use digital technologies etc. are now essential requirements, it said.

“In view of the above, the Institute now needs to urgently build new/additional hostel and academic blocks to fulfill its Vision and Mission, while simultaneously replacing the old hostels,” IIM Calcutta said.
