NEW DELHI, AUGUST 3: University Grants Commission has approved the recommendation of according the deemed university status to Indian Institute of Mass Communication. In the past, UGC had set up a committee which included Parmar as chairman, Rajasthan University’s Journalism Department Head Dr Sanjeev Hanawat, DAVV Indore’s EMRC producer Dr Chandan Gupta as members and submit a report about the infrastructure and faculty of IIMC.

After reviewing the report, UGC has proposed to the government to issue a Letter of Intent (LoI) to IIMC under the ‘De Novo’ category. Under the ‘De Novo’ category, IIMC will be focussing on undertaking research and teaching in the “emerging areas of knowledge.

Director General of IIMC, K G Suresh state, “UGC has approved the proposal to grant deemed university to IIMC.” In the past Ministry of Information and Broadcasting had granted permission to IIMC to apply for deemed university status and the proposal was then sent to the Ministry of Human Resources Development.

The committee which visited IIMC campus backed the proposal and had stated that IIMC had to upgrade the faculty and infrastructure in accordance with the norms laid down by the UGC. They had to also prepare a comprehensive syllabus for the five new programmes which they had proposed to introduce.

Once the government accords the deemed university status to IIMC, the institute will be able to issue degrees for the different programmes. Till now the institute offers postgraduate diploma in various courses at the regional campuses of IIMC
