IIT Delhi professor Bhim Singh gets Vigyan Shri Award in engineering sciences

Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskar 2024: Vigyan Shri Awards are given to the scientists who have made distinguished contributions in the field of science and technology.
NEW DELHI : President Droupadi Murmu presented the Vigyan Shri Award to Bhim Singh, electrical engineering professor at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi, in engineering sciences at a ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan today, August 22. The Vigyan Shri Awards are conferred upon the scientists who have made distinguished contributions to the field of science and technology.
The IIT Delhi professor is a prolific researcher & technology mentor with good applied and translational research and has been honored with the Vigyan Shri Award for his immense contribution towards the development of power electronics for renewable energy sources, including e-mobility, as per an official statement.
Singh’s research areas include solar PV grid interface systems, microgrids, power quality monitoring and mitigation, solar PV water pumping systems, improved power quality AC-DC converters, power electronics, electrical machines, drives, and electric vehicles.

Achievements of the IIT Delhi alumnus
Singh is also an alumnus of IIT Delhi. He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Roorkee (now IIT Roorkee) in 1977, and completed PhD from IIT Delhi in 1983, respectively.
“Singh joined the Department of Electrical Engineering, IIT Delhi, in 1990. He was head of the department of electrical engineering from July 2014 to August 2016. Singh was dean of academics at IIT Delhi from August 2016 to August 2019,” adds the official statement.
Singh has been serving as a Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB) National Science Chair and Emeritus Professor at IIT Delhi since July 2021. He has been the chairman of Board of Governors (BoG), Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology (SVNIT), Surat, since July 2023.
The professor has guided 129 PhD dissertations and 183 ME, MTech, and MSR theses. He has filed 108 patents. He also mentored the start-up such as M/S Quanteon Private Limited, M/S HyperX Energy Private Limited, M/S Intellicon Technologies Private Limited.
Bhim Singh received the Khosla National Research Award from IIT Roorkee in 2013. He is a recipient of the Om Prakash Bhasin Award 2014 in the field of engineering including energy and aerospace.
Moreover, Singh has received the IEEE PES Nari Hingorani Custom Power Award 2017, the inaugural Faculty Lifetime Research Award 2018 for overall research contribution at IIT Delhi. He also won the first International Solar Alliance (ISA)- Haryana Kalpana Chawla Solar Award for working towards developing solutions in the solar energy sector to help create a sustainable and low-carbon world for generations to come.
