IIT Hyderabad gets Institute of National Eminence status; 100% tax exemption on donations

IIT-H: Donations to the institution will get 100% tax exemption under section 80G, replacing the earlier 50% benefit.
NEW DELHI: Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Hyderabad has been granted Institute of National Eminence status by the Income Tax Department, Ministry of Finance. The status, effective from March 27, 2025, will provide 100% tax exemption under section 80G of the Income-tax Act, 1961, on donations.
Earlier, donations made to IIT Hyderabad qualified for a 50% tax exemption. With this approval, donors can now claim a 100% tax deduction on their contributions. As per the institute, the exemption is expected to encourage more donations from individuals and organisations, supporting academic initiatives, research, technological innovation and infrastructure development at a great pace.

Speaking about the status, the director of IIT Hyderabad, BS Murty, stated, "IITH welcomes philanthropists, corporate partners, and well-wishers to join us in our mission to drive transformative education and groundbreaking research, indigenous technology development and entrepreneurial ecosystem through their donations and contributions. This is a valuable opportunity to make a meaningful impact on innovation and societal progress towards Viksit Bharat."
Mahendrakumar Madhavan, dean ACR, stated, “Giving is a joyous feeling, especially when it is for a righteous cause that benefits humanity as a whole. It becomes even more joyful when the donation for a cause is 100% tax-exempt. As an institute of national importance, contribution to IIT Hyderabad is now accorded full tax waiver, further providing impetus to research and development initiatives, making it a knowledge hub of the nation."
