IIT Kanpur, DICUL AM to develop 3D-printed implants for spinal treatments

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur has joined hands with DICUL AM Private Limited to enhance the design, development, and manufacturing of patient-specific 3D-printed implants for orthopaedic and spinal treatments.

As a flagship project of the Gangwal School of Medical Sciences and Technology, led by Sandeep Varma, this project is being led by Ashok Kumar and his team from the Department of Biological Sciences and Bioengineering, IIT Kanpur.

“Under this collaboration, IIT Kanpur will lead the design and development of customised biodegradable and non-biodegradable implants, while DICL AM Private Limited will handle their manufacturing in compliance with regulatory standards,” the press release said.

“The Datta Meghe Institute of Higher Education and Research (DMIHER) in Wardha is joining this partnership as a clinical collaborator to support the initiation of clinical trials,” it added.

“Partnerships between academic institutions and industry are crucial for promoting indigenous innovation in advanced medical technologies,” said Manindra Agrawal, Director of IIT Kanpur.

He added that such collaborations also align with national initiatives like Make in India and Viksit Bharat Abhiyan 2047.

This partnership aims to provide advanced, patient-centred implant solutions and also to enhance domestic capabilities in the medical technology manufacturing sector.
