Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has signed an agreement with the University of Canterbury (UC), New Zealand, to expand international academic opportunities and create structured global platform for students enrolled in its Bachelor of Science (BS) programmes.

As part of the collaboration, students enrolled in the BS programmes at IIT Madras will have the opportunity to advance to a Master of Applied Data Science at the University of Canterbury upon completing their undergraduate studies. Those selected will finish their BS at IIT Madras before transitioning to the postgraduate programme at UC.

The collaboration also facilitates student and faculty mobility between the two institutions and enables exchange programmes, joint research initiatives and co-teaching opportunities, besides academic engagement through conferences, seminars, and collaborative discussions.

IIT Madras: Learning via SWAYAM, NPTEL

As per the official press note the other key components of the agreement is the expansion of online and hybrid learning models. Both institutions plan to leverage digital platforms such as SWAYAM and NPTEL to widen access to quality education across geographies.

While announcing the collaboration IIT Madras said that it aims to enable students to transition seamlessly from undergraduate studies in India to postgraduate education abroad.

The Centre for Outreach and Digital Education (CODE) at IIT Madras will coordinate the implementation of this partnership, including digital programmes and international outreach.

Highlighting the significance of the initiative, Prathap Haridoss, dean academic courses, IIT Madras, said the partnership is focused on building “meaningful global pathways” and allowing students to move into international education while maintaining academic flexibility.

IIT Madras said in the official press note that the collaboration is also expected to strengthen academic exchange between the two institutions through student and faculty mobility, joint research, and co-teaching opportunities. It will further include engagement through conferences, seminars, and collaborative academic activities.

Michael Grimley, dean of future learning and development, said the collaboration brings together strengths in “digital innovation, research, and industry-aligned education.”
