IIT Mandi PhD scholar dies under mysterious circumstances

A PhD scholar at the Indian Institute of Technology, IIT Mandi, lost his life on September 5. He was found dead under some mysterious conditions in his rented house in Kataula. Gurpreet Singh was one of the scholars in the School of Mechanical and Materials Engineering. The institute informed the IIT Mandi community about his death in an email, expressing "profound grief" over the loss.

The mail reads, "It is with profound grief and heavy hearts that we inform you about the tragic demise of one of our PhD scholars in the School of Mechanical and Materials Engineering, Gurpreet Singh (D23256) under some mysterious conditions in his rented house in Kataula yesterday. This heartbreaking incident has cast a deep shadow of sorrow across the entire IIT Mandi community."

The matter is currently under investigation, and the IIT Mandi administration said it was fully cooperating with the concerned authorities. The mail further reads, "During this extremely difficult time, the thoughts, prayers, and deepest condolences of the IIT Mandi administration are with the bereaved family and loved ones of the student. We stand in solidarity with them and pray that they find strength and courage to bear this irreparable loss."

The incident has left students, faculty, and staff at the institute in shock and grief, the administration said.
