NEW DELHI: The Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath announced the establishment of medical colleges in Shamli and Mau districts in public-private partnership (PPP) mode. The quality ratings of all nursing and paramedical institutes of the state was released under the Mission Niramaya on Wednesday by the chief minister. Uttar Pradesh is the first state to get ratings of nursing and paramedical institutes.

Calling it a ‘historic’ day for the medical education sector in Uttar Pradesh, the CM Yogi Adityanath said that 8 more institutes have been given the mentor certificate under the ‘mentor-mentee’ initiative adopted to build a relationship between old nursing colleges and new ones to improve the quality of education.

The Mission Niramaya was launched last year-end with an aim to revamp the nursing and paramedical education and training. Today, Yogi Adityanath, formally released the rating of 383 nursing colleges, and 294 paramedical colleges in the state, including both private as well as government colleges.

UP to get new medical colleges

On this occasion, the CM informed that there were only 12 medical colleges in the state before 2017 but after releasing the concept of ‘one district one medical college’ proposed by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi, medical colleges were established in all districts.

“Today government medical colleges are operational in 45 districts, while construction is underway in 16 districts,” he said.

Calling it a ‘dream come true’, the chief minister said: “Six years ago, Mau district was known for mafia influence and Shamli for migration, but now medical colleges are going to be set in both these districts”.

The agreement to set up medical colleges was signed between the Rajiv Samajik Shiksha Sewa Sansthan in Mau district and the identified private partner Gyan Chetna Educational Society in Shamli district and the Uttar Pradesh government. “A private medical college will be set up at each place by a private investor with an investment of about Rs 250 crore,” he added.

Taking a dig at the previous government, Adityanath said that the paramedical and nursing institutions were neglected for years and there was no focus on quality education.

“Under ‘Mission Niramaya’, 12 good institutions were identified as mentors. As a result of the ongoing reform process with the mentor-mentee policy, today 8 more institutes have been upgraded as mentors. This is proof of the changing system,” the minister added.

“It was decided to establish medical colleges on PPP (Public Private Partnership) basis in 16 unserved districts of the state. In this sequence, private investors have been selected in Maharajganj and Sambhal in the past and construction of medical colleges is in progress at both the places,” the statement read.

Quality ranking of nursing colleges by QCI

The chief minister said that the quality ranking of nursing and paramedical institutions is done by Quality Control of India (QCI) with “accuracy and transparency”.

Describing the chief minister's 'Mission Niramaya' vision as ‘inspiring’, QCI secretary general RP Singh said NITI Aayog has asked the Indian Nursing Council (INC) to implement a similar system across the country.

Emphasizing that there should be “no compromise with quality in educational institutions”, he said: “If the standard is met, then the benefit of all the eligible schemes of its government should be given without delay. And if it does not meet the standard, then such institutions should be removed from its list.”
