The hunger strike by three JMI students comes amid renewed demands for a students’ union on campus and a platform to participate in campus decision-making.
Three Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) students have launched a hunger strike demanding the restoration of the students’ union and the democracy on campus.
The JMI protest is being organised under the campaign for the Jamia Millia Islamia Students’ Union (JMISU), calls for student representation and has urged others to stand in solidarity with the hunger strike.
This comes a few days after Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) announced its students’ union elections 2026-27 following a 20-day student protest.
'Three students. No food. One demand'
AMU has also replaced its proctor Mohammad Naveed Khan with Mohammad Nafees Ahmed Ansari, professor of the Department of Political Science.
“Three students. No food. One demand,” the campaign read, calling for the restoration of student democracy at the JMI campus.
The students’ protest at JMI has been circulated on social media, with campaign messages tracing its origins to discussions around the AMUSU and the subsequent mobilisation for JMISU.
The ongoing protest has been described as a movement that began with a “small spark” of resistance and grew into a collective demand for student representation.
The hunger strike by three JMI students comes amid renewed requests by the students for a students’ union at JMI campus. The protesters were demanding a platform through which students can participate in campus decision-making and have their concerns represented.
