JEE Main to be held in Hindi and English only from 2021, Gujarati to be dropped

New Delhi, November 6: JEE Main will be seeing a major change as NTA decides to drop its only regional language - Gujarati as a medium of attempting the exam from the year 2021. Students will have to attempt JEE Main in English and Hindi only from 2021. As per an official from the National Testing Agency “The advisory committee of the JEE-Main has decided to drop Gujarati as a medium for question papers from January 2021. The questions will be available in Hindi and English only”.

Top 2.4 lakhs students from JEE Main 2020 will be screened through JEE Advanced for admission into IITs. JEE Advanced is conducted once every year for students who have qualified JEE Main.

National Testing Agency took over CBSE to conduct JEE Main from the year 2019 and since then there have been many changes relating to the engineering entrance exam. Earlier in 2019, NTA announced JEE Main will be conducted twice every year in computer based test mode. Students till this year can attempt the exam in English, Hindi and Gujarati.

Before 2019, Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) was the conducting body of JEE Main. In 2013, CBSE added Marathi, Urdu and Gujarati as languages for attempting the JEE Main question paper, but further in 2016, Urdu and Marathi were dropped as exam mediums. Gujarati was still kept as a language to attempt the exam, but since 2016, state engineering colleges have not admitted students through JEE Main, instead GUJCET has been given preference for admissions. The advisory comittee of JEE Main discussed this in the recent meet and finally decided upon dropping Gujarati as a medium for attempting JEE Main.
