JMI registrar Mahtab Alam Rizvi appointed visiting professor at Lumbini Buddhist University

Jamia Millia Islamia: Rizvi will join the South Asia Centre for Peace Research & Sustainable Development. He has held key academic and policy roles, including Director at JMI’s Nelson Mandela Centre and positions in government think tanks.
Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) Registrar Mahtab Alam Rizvi has been appointed as a visiting professor at Lumbini Buddhist University, Nepal. He will be associated with the university’s South Asia Centre for Peace Research & Sustainable Development, which researches peacebuilding, diplomacy, regional cooperation, and sustainable development.
Commenting on his appointment, Rizvi said, “I am grateful for this opportunity to advance peacebuilding, fostering regional cooperation, diplomacy, and sustainable development.” As per the institution, Rizvi assumed charge as the regular registrar of JMI on March 12, 2025, for a five-year term. Before this, he served as the Director of the Nelson Mandela Centre for Peace and Conflict Resolution at JMI.
Rizvi holds a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Political Science (International Relations) from AMU and was awarded the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library Scholarship for Doctoral Studies at Teen Murti House, New Delhi. As per the official press release, he has contributed to research and publications that have been referenced by scholars in India and internationally.

Roles in academic and institutional bodies
Rizvi has held positions in government organisations and think tanks, including the Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses (IDSA), New Delhi. “He specialises in international relations, foreign policy, and security studies with a focus on Iran, Iran's nuclear program, issues of conflict and peace in West Asia and North Africa region, peacebuilding in South Asia and West Asia and Iran-China economic, political, and defence relations,” the official press release said.
The institute further states that Rizvi has been a Visitor’s Nominee of the Aligarh Muslim University Court since April 2022. He also serves as an external member of the Institutional Academic Integrity Panel (IAIP) at Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU), Hyderabad, and participates on the boards of multiple Centres and Departments at JMI.
