11 JNU students file sexual harassment complaints alleging professor offers extra marks for sexual favours

Around 11 students of the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) have raised a complaint against a professor for allegedly offering extra marks in exchange for sexual favours. The students have approached the JNU’s internal complaints committee over the professor’s alleged inappropriate conduct, and sexually suggestive remarks.

The allegations came to light after a student shared her experience during a viva examination in May 2026, encouraging others to come forward with similar accounts.

The university’s internal complaints committee has begun the proceedings against the professor and asked students to record their statements. The professor allegedly used inappropriate language during classes and sexual advances at gatherings at his campus residence, as per the students.

According to a Hindustan Times report, a student shared her experience with fellow students on an unofficial whatsapp group, prompting others to show-up with similar allegations.

"He made remarks suggesting that he would award them extra marks if the students accepted his sexual advances,” HT reported, citing sources.

Students have also alleged that the professor invited them to his residence on the JNU campus, where he allegedly made sexual advances, the report added.

A few months ago, several students have raised sexual harassment complaint against a senior faculty member, the report added.

Furthermore, in April last year, the university’s executive council removed four staff members, including a teaching faculty member, accused of sexual harassment and corruption, it said.
